Sell Your Crap, Pay Off Your Debt, Do What You Love

For the past few weeks I’ve been having a lot of thoughts about simplifying my life; evaluating my relationship with my material possessions, how they effect my mood, my so-called happiness, and my ability to adapt to change.  Then I stumbled upon this video by Adam Baker, who runs a blog that I really like called Man vs Debt, that touches on the exact thing I was feeling inside, and puts it into words perfectly.  Please take a few minutes and watch this video.  It’s very inspiring.

Great, great video. Funny that you posted it, as I have been in the midst of trying to sell off some stuff I don’t need the past week myself.

turning point = focus away from what we don’t want toward what we do want = cultivation of our flow, knowledge of our own power, flexibility, creative ability = releasing of our resistance > any amount of stuff acquired ~

i’ve been struggling with it too.  from seemingly small items like studio gear, to larger items like my book and vinyl collection.  i’ve been really considering getting rid of a lot of stuff, and simplifying my life some, and this video really hit home.  so many things in my house that i don’t really need, that are there just to fill up space.

I find myself about to make a move and put tons of crap in storage but now I feel like I should sell a lot of these things and not let myself collect so many needless things.

i feel you 100%.  my family is big on the storage units too.  I’m trying to avoid that route myself, and just sell my shit

Think of all the crap people just accumulated from Christmas. It’s basically people giving other people stuff to hold them back. Next Christmas people should only buy music and concert tickets.

I needed this video/talk in my life right at this moment. This is the very reason I can’t create or live up to my potential, I’ve got too much crap. I justify why I need to keep something… It’s ridiculous…. I’m going to start letting go.

christmas is definitely the worst of it.  one of the strongest points of his talk and his blog, is how he makes the distinction between buying stuff or buying experiences.  Experiences are what make life feel more full, and stuff is just…stuff. I would like to apply that to my own life.

Great stuff. I liked pretty much everything he had to say.

I recently sold my car and quit my job to go on a six week tour with my band. After eight years at my job, it was a really big move. I can’t say that I’ve got everything figured out, but I do know what’s important to my wife & I… and we’re definitely headed in the right direction.

I’ve realized over the years that my collection of books, music and whatever else I hold onto are just reflections of the things I did not have as a kid. I’ve felt like keeping these things is supposed to equal the experiences I had with them. Now it feels like nothing more than clutter in the mind most of the time. Pretty interesting to take a step back and look at it that way.

that’s a really insightful way to look at it. I’m struggling with the same things. I imagine having a huge yard sale this spring to hopefully get rid of some more stuff. I got rid of a lot of books, but my record collection is still overwhelming
