What happened to Myspace?

Posted on 21 October 2009

A few weeks back i saw a fellow-artist post a status update on his facebook page saying something to the effect of “wait, you mean to tell me that i spent all this time getting my myspace page looking good and now its a dead?!” and as an artist i feel his pain.

So, I figure that instead of blogging and trying to share my perspective I would ask everybody a question, and see if you all can give me your thoughts on what happened to myspace? Or better yet, what your personal story is as to why you don’t visit it as much anymore? It doesn’t have to be anything long, a couple sentences or paragraphs would work. I’m just curious about everybody’s experience.

Honestly, the low cost of entry led to a flood of uneducated simpletons trying to be seen/heard. Everyone has learned from MySpace's mistake and there is nothing MySpace can do to really become relevant again. It is too big and congested. Now sites run beta tests until they work the kinks out, which MySpace never did. They are JUST now offering site analytics for music pages. Too little, too late... These sites have also learned there's no point in being real big if the users aren't using. It is obvious that MySpace never had a plan to what they were trying to accomplish.
As an early adopter type, I have no desire to go back to MySpace unless they dumped everyone and started at the beginning. I'll check people's pages for information, but that's it.
  • Yall are all so right about the demise of myspace being the artists themselves. I feel weird about it myself because I am an artist, and while i did see the power it had in reaching fans, i also saw just how annoying some people can be. There are times when i dread looking in my inbox or at my comments because its nothing but artists promoting their shit, and hardly ever any real people that just wanna say "yo, your shit is dope, keep doing it print".

the downside is that i think it's going to put a lot of artists in a weird limbo as far as having a main hub and online presence, because in a way myspace had pretty much totally replaced the artist website. Many artists didnt see the need to have or maintain their current sites, and now that myspace is just not that attractive anymore they have to begin again, and in beginning again you have to start sending traffic to that other place all over again, which sucks because myspace was such a hub that you could take advantage of their traffic.

so now i guess the question is what's next, and will there ever be a social network like myspace that is great for musicians but protects the regular users from all the bullshit that myspace didn't?
  • I used to love changing my profile page around, I loved being able to mess around with the HTML. So many people just wacked out their pages with videos and pictures and songs and didn't know how to design a cool webpage - they took too long to load and were too hard to read.

I know a lot of bands who keep up their pages though and I still use it for checking out new, unsigned acts that don't have their own website. I think it's still cool if you have a good looking myspace page somewhere, especially as an artist.

Like Paul said, the sight is slow.. Also in the begining it was a great place to explore and find new music. It cool finding and rooting for the unsigned acts, who are really making music. then myspace became to MTVish, when I'm browising I don't want to be pushed to check out Dane Cooks website, that dude sucks.

I still go on there to check artists tour dates. because of that feature I found my self going on roadtrips when a band I like stopped at a nearby city. Let me keep close tabs on groups. Wish facebook could incorporate something like that.

For me, it was just how bloated MySpace was. True, MySpace allowed a lot more customization than other social networking sites, but I think that people got frustrated with the convoluted interface. Ever visit somebody's MySpace page where they put up tons of graphics and special effects? Shit would use up a lot of system resources and leave your browser crawling.
